Well we made it, made it through the first month of 2020. As we say good bye to January, we say hello to February with great anticipation as we look to celebrate the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl all month long. Yes, you will see lobsters everywhere, but there are many non-lobster events happening on the South Shore this weekend too. Let’s have a look and start making plans.

Jan 31 – Morning Hike at Miller Point Peace Park (Dayspring)
Groundwork hosts a Monthly Hike so that you can connect with other entrepreneurs, spark some creative thinking and strategize/problem solve together, Believing that it is important to move your bodies (especially) when you are deep into building/scaling/growing your business, Groundwork sees this to be an opportunity to hold yourself accountable to putting your body/health before your business.
Jan 31 – Macrame + Flow Evening (Bridgewater)
Free to Be Yoga with Christy and The Salt Spa & Wellness Centre invite you to Macrame + Flow this Friday. Grab a friend, or treat yourself, to this one-of-a-kind event. The night will begin with a tour of the Salt Spa, then a demonstration on how to use knots to create your own macrame plant hanger. The evening finishes with a beginner level yoga class, where you can untie the knots on your bodies. No macrame or yoga experience necessary. Tickets are $35 (all material provided) $45 (for extra materials for a DIY hanger at home). Must be registered in advance.
Jan 31 – Traps & Trawls Escape Room (Barrington)
Mile East Productions is bring their Traps & Trawls Escape Room to Barrington as a part of the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl. It’s time to put together your escape team and navigate the clues, puzzles and cryptic messages in order to solve the mystery of the 2020 lobster season! Will you have the skilled deck hands to solve the puzzles in under 60 minutes? Cost is $15 per guest. Please see Facebook Event for dates and times.
Jan 31 – Lahave River Beer Release (Bridgewater)
Lahave River Beer introduces The Amaretto Milk Stout. The first Lahave River Beer of 2020. King Street Beer Co’s Taproom Manager and Saltbox Brewer Jon got together to brew this delicious Amaretto Milk Stout styled after The Barn Coffee & Social House popular Amore Latte. Join them for the release at 6:30pm and stick around to enjoy Amelia Bishop performing original songs following the beer release.
Jan 31 – Free Swims at the LCLC (Bridgewater)
Fridays are for swimming! The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre is pleased to offer Free Swims Fridays from 6pm-8pm January and February. Sponsored by the NS Department of Communities, Culture & Heritage, a great way to have some “summer” fun in the middle of winter.
Jan 31 – Lunenburg: A Baroque Tour (Lunenburg)
Symphony Nova Scotia present A Baroque Tour this Friday at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg. Enjoy Baroque specialist Jeanne Lamon and Symphony Nova Scotia as they embark upon a musical Grand Tour starting in England, through France, Italy, and Germany, performing Baroque gems from Handel, Marais, Vivaldi, and Bach. Jan 31 – Music Night Fundraiser (Barrington)
Barrington Leisure Park Association is hosting a Music Night Fundraiser this Friday from 7pm-9pm. Enjoy performance by Silver Seas, Susannah & Autumn Dedrick and Olivia Smith, Amber Jean Malone, Robert Richardson and more. There will be door prize tickets and small canteen. Entry is $10 per person, children 10 and under and youth with scooter or skateboard get in free!
Jan 31 – Public Skating at Lunenburg Arena (Lunenburg)
Looking to get out on the ice? The Lunenburg Arena has Public Skates on Fridays 3-4:30pm, and family skates on Sundays 6:15-7:30pm. $4 for Adults $3 for Children and Youth.
Jan 31 – Midget A Hockey Queens County Cougars (Liverpool)
Friday Night Hockey is happening at Queens Place Emera Centre with the Queens County Cougars in action. Come cheer on the home team as they take on the Western Valley Spartans. Puck drops at 8:00pm.
Jan 31 – “Parasite” at the Chester Playhouse Theatre
The Chester Playhouse Theatre presents the critically acclaimed, best picture Oscar Nominee “Parasite“, this Friday at 7:30pm. Follow the story as all unemployed, Ki-taek and his family take peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks, as they ingratiate themselves into their lives and get entangled in an unexpected incident. Tickets $10 and are available at the door.

Feb 1 – Winter Frolic at Ross Farm Museum (New Ross)
Winter is fun at Ross Farm Museum with their Winter Frolic. This weekend join them for a sleigh ride, and enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate made over an open fire. Visit the farm workshop and sample some homemade ice cream. Bring your toboggan; we have a fabulous coasting hill. We also have snowshoes available for you to borrow, or you can bring your own skis and snowshoes. Open both Saturday and Sunday at 9am. Now to cross our fingers for snow!❄️
Feb 1 – Little Adventurers Outdoor Program (Barrington)
The Barrington Municipal Recreation Department invites you to Little Adventurers, an outdoor program for children ages 8 and under. There will be time on the playground and then head for a walk on the Sherose Island Nature Trail. Meet at the Sherose Island playground at 10am. This free program is a parented program – participants must be accompanied by a paren or guardian for the duration of the program.
Feb 1 – Crawl Aboard the Lobster Crawl at White Point (Liverpool)
February 1st kicks off the Crawl a’board the Lobster Crawl celebrations at White Point Beach Resort has a trap full of events! This Saturday enjoy the Lobster Lovers Feast. Join them for a good ole fashioned lobster boil with all the traditional taste of Nova Scotia Trimmings! Compete with bibs, our souvenir Sou’Wester, sea shanties, and even a few surprises. Feb 1 – Crochet Basics (Mahone Bay)
The ladies at Have A Yarn are at it again. This Saturday join them at 10:30am for Crochet Basics. This workshop will provide you with the basic information needed for beginning crochet and give you the opportunity to practice. You will learn stitches that are the foundation of crochet, tips for reading written and charted patterns, and put your new skills to use. As well, you will receive a take home pattern for a cotton dishcloth, featuring stitches you have learned in the workshop. Cost is $60, yarn is provided. Feb – Laura Churchhill Duke Book Signing (Bridgewater)
Join Coles Bridgwater Mall this Saturday at 1:00pm as they welcome Kentville Author Laura Churchill Duke as she promotes and signs copies of her book, “Two Crows Sorrow”. Laura Churchill Duke’s carefully-researched tale brings to life the shocking events that ended a life and changed the tiny community of Burlington NS. Tucked away on the slopes of Nova Scotia’s North Mountain in 1904, Burlington was home to hardworking farmers, complicated family dynamics, passionate lovers, and a murderer. I have to say I’m hooked.
Feb 1 – Mark Making with Tamar Drushka (Bridgewater)
Join artist Tamar Drushka on Saturday 2 pm at the DesBrisay Museum, Bridgewater. Tamar will begin her month-long metamorphic installation and creating artwork, sharing her process and offering the opportunity for visitors to experiment in the mark making process. This is the first day of active working on this continually evolving exhibit, so be sure to check back throughout the month. Free, donations appreciated.
Feb 1 – Cookie Concert : Foxfire (Lunenburg)
Musique Royal presents another Cookie Concert this Saturday with Foxfire. Foxfire is the eclectic trio consisting of Coco Harris, Mary Knickle and Miranda Lever. Sit back and enjoy as they soulfully bring you a wide range of songs, velvet rich harmonies, accompanied by a myriad of instruments. Cookie Concerts are hour long presentations incorporating music with other artistic creativity, for the whole family to enjoy! Music starts at 2:00pm at the Lunenburg School of the Arts Tickets are $5 at the door (ages 4 and under are free)
Feb 1 – Fondues & Wine Pairings (Hubbards)
Anchorage House & Cottages in Hubbards presents the final evening of their Wine Tasting series Fondues & Wine Pairing. Are you ready to indulge ? Join sommelier Manfred Vollmer and treat yourself while learning how to prepare your own fondue party. Indulge with a Cheese Fondue paired with Riesling; Bourguignon Fondue paired with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chocolate Fondue paired with Shiraz. Tickets are $75 and available via Eventbrite.

Visit Barrington and Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl invite you to the Songs of the Sea Kitchen Party Kickoff this Saturday. Make your way to the Barrington Municipal Building for an evening of songs of sea! Lead by Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Famer, Lynne Crowell, you will enjoy an evening of musical entertainment by local musicians, as they tell tales of the sea through song. Feb 2 – Lucy the Shadow Seeking Lobster (Barrington)
It’s Groundhog Day with a twist, at 8am this Sunday, Lucy the Lob’STAR will be crawling out of the ocean in Barrington in search of her shadow offering and her prediction about how much winter is left in 2020. Everyone is welcome to join in with the Municipality of Barrington, at the gazebo at the Cape Sable Island Causeway. Arrive for 7:45AM (yes, AM!), cheer Lucy on and see how long we have to wait for spring.
Feb 2 – Lobster Crawl Breakfast (Barrington Passage)
Salty Shores Inn & Cafe are hosting a Lobster Crawl Breakfast this Sunday from 8-11:30am. Eat in or take out, scrambled eggs, bacon and a Belgium waffle……add lobster for some extra taste! Make it a morning filled with fun, go and watch Lucy the lobster see her shadow or not, then head over for a hot breakfast!
Feb – Crib Tournament (New Ross)
The Forties Community Centre is holding a Crib Tournament this Sunday in New Ross. Doors open 12 noon, registration starts 12:30 and play starts 1pm Entry fee is $ 20.00 team. There will be a canteen available, the venue is wheelchair accessible. For more information call 689-2147.
Feb 2 – The Dome Chronicles at Margaret Hennigar Library (Bridgewater)
Nevermore Press and South Shore Public Libraries invites you to the Margaret Hennigar Public Libray for a meet and greet with “The Dome Chronicles” author Garry Leeson. The story of a an eager young couple and their move to Kingston, Nova Scotia bound for a deserted hundred-acre farm on the South Mountain in Harmony, determined to preserve the foundations of farmsteads past while constructing a geodesic dome.
Feb 2 – Super Bowl Tailgate at King Street Beer Co. (Bridgewater)
Join the gang at King Street Beer for Super Bowl LIV Tailgate Party. Feb 2 – Super Bowl LIV Viewing Party (Liverpool)
The Liverpool Curling Club is hosting a Super Bowl LVI Viewing Party this Sunday starting at 3pm. $10 admission gets you warm eats, plus there will be lots of cold beer and other beverages for purchase. Lots of games throughout the day to test your prognosticating skills. Please RSVP with the club to help with food quantities.
Feb 2 – Wine and Lobster (Petite Riviere)
What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Petite Riviere Vineyards invites you to sip some delicious Nova Scotia wine paired with Nova Scotia lobster appetizers. This Wine & Lobster Pairing Event takes place February 2nd from 2-5pm. Tickets are $70pp. there is limited seating so reserve your spot today.
