Is it just me or is the summer flying by? Just because we are coming up to the dog days of August, doesn’t mean there isn’t still an incredible amount of summer fun still to be had. Once again, the South Shore has events happening for everyone! Here’s what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend.
What’s Happening on the South Shore, Friday August 16th
August 16 – Rock the Dock Festival 2019
Frndzone Entertainment Inc. and Rock the Dock Festival bring you the 5th annual Rock the Dock – 2019. Set amongst the trees of a gorgeous lakeside property, and inspired by the memories of friends past, Rock the Dock music festival is an multi-day celebration of music, arts, life, and community. Tickets available via Eventbrite.
August 16 – Mandala Rock Painting and Vinyasa Flow Workshop
Free to Be Yoga with Christy and The Salt Spa & Wellness Centre host the Mandala Rock Painting & Vinyasa Flow Workshop . Join them at The Salt Spa & Wellness Centre in Bridgewater. Start with a tour of the spa, tap into your creativity by creating Mandalas, and finish with a restoring vinyasa flow class. Tickets are $30 per person, space is limited, so grab your ticket as soon as you can!
August 16 – Green Bay & Area Artists Art Show
The Green Bay & Area Artsists welcome you to their 3rd annual art show and sale “Painting, Pottery, and More” at the Petite Rivière Winery. Join them at their opening on from 3-5pm, to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and to see the artwork. The show continues Saturday 11-5pm and Sunday 11-4pm.
August 16 – Opening Reception Medway Head Lighthouse Art & Craft Show
The 9th annual Lighthouse Art and Craft Show and Sale opens with a reception, raffle, conversation, and, of course , the opportunity to be the first to see this year’s show and pick up your favourite pieces for your collection! The show continues from Aug 16th – 25th.
August 16 – Blue Rocks/Stonehurst Variety Show
Head down to St. Pauls United Church Hall for the Blue Rocks/Stonehurst Variety show. Live entertainment with your MC Wayne Morash. Doors open 6:15, show from 7pm -10pm. Try your luck with the 50/50 draw. This is a Free Will Offering event, everyone is welcome.
August 16 – The Adventures of Pinnochio
The Chester Playhouse Summer Theatre School Presents “The Adventures of Pinocchio”. The traditional Italian story of a wooden puppet yearning to be a real boy springs to life with inventive and awe-inspiring puppetry. This family musical illuminates the bond between parents and children in a magical performance that is sure to enchant audiences of all ages! Tickets available online via Vendini.

Aug 17 – Helly Hansen Chester Race Week
Hosted by the Chester Yacht Club the Helly Hansen Chester Race Week is North America’s largest annual keel boat race week (4 days of sailing) and plays host to more than 130 boats from near and far. A community-based, volunteer-driven event, Chester Race Week boasts a full schedule of public-friendly events with live music, great food, yacht races, plus racing seminars from internationally renowned sailors, tacticians, boat builders and sailmakers. August 17 – Salty Dog Chester Race Week Sea Excursions
See all the race week action from the sea! Salty Dog Sea Tours will host 4 tours daily out of Chester Yacht Club at 10am, 12noon, 2pm and 4pm. The hour long tour will cost $30 per person plus tax. Children under 5yrs are 1/2 price and under 2yrs are free. You can pay by cash or credit card, there is no minimum age, the boat is wheelchair and walker friendly and also has an awning in case of rain.
August 17 – Barrington Municipal Exhibition
Known as the Big Little Ex, the Barrington Municipal Exhibition has something for everyone! Ox hauls, horse shows, inflatable rides, motorsports, animals, lumberjack shows, and live entertainment all weekend are just a few of the things you will find. Don’t forget the 2k/5k Fun Run on Saturday to get your day started.
August 17 – Mermaid Day
The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is hosting Mermaid Day this Saturday from 9:30am – 5:30pm. Featuring Halifax Mermaids, kids activities, tea party, Mermaids Myths and Legends presentation, Under The Sea Children’s Parade & lots more. Lots of fun for kids and kids at heart.
August 17 – 4th Annual Beach Battle Wrestling Tournament
Whether you’re a new wrestler or seasoned grappler come join the fun in Green Bay, NS for the Beach Battle Sand Wrestling tournament! Register to participate or come on down to cheer them on. Registration starts at 10:30 AM with registration costing $20 which is payable at event.
August 17 – Hank Snow Tribute Show #29
The 29th Annual Hank Snow Tribute is set to take place Queens Place Emera Centre this weekend. Four days of incredible music honouring the South Shore’s own Hank Snow as well as country Legend George Jones. Tickets available onsite and via Ticketpro.ca
August 17 – Blue Rocks Art Artisan and Craft Show
The Blue Rocks Art Artisan & Craft Show features all local artists & artisans displaying paintings, stained glass, photography, hand made jewelry, clothing, homemade jams, & more. Stop in at St. Barnabas Anglican Church Hall between 10am – 4pm.
August 17 – The 33rd Annual Chapin Family Concert
The Ovens Natural Park hosts the 33rd Annual Chapin Family Concert. Head to the Lunenburg Opera House for an intimate evening of songs and the stories that bring them to life. Don’t miss out on your favourite Chapin singers; Jen, Tom, Steve, The Chapin Sisters, “Big” John Wallace along with many others! It is sure to be a wonderful evening of music. August 17 – Memorial Auto Show at Privateer Park
Check out antique/classic cars, drag vehicles, motorcycles, Big Rigs and more at 2019 Memorial Auto Show in Liverpool! Concession stand and DJ music will make this a fun filled day for any car buff out there.
August 17 – Live History:Behind Glass
The Fort Point Museum presents “Live History:Behind Glass”. Enjoy a unique experience of theatre showcasing our local LaHave history. There is a card in the display case but no item behind it and the artifacts are standing wrong side up. Clearly, the venue needs your help. As an invited curator you must help solve the mystery behind these disturbances as different exhibits come to life. August 17 – Mahone Bay Craft Fair
The St. James Anglican Parish Hall is home to a craft fair this Saturaday. Showcasing local crafters, there is something for everyone, stop by and support small business on the South Shore. Free Admission to this event.
August 17 – Nicola Miller Quartet at King Street Beer Co.
Live at King Street Beer Co! Join Nicola and Friends Saturday Night from 7pm-9pm and enjoy a Saltbox Beer while listening to their jazz tunes. Thinking you may get a little peckish? Bring your own snacks, or take out from one of many local restaurants and relax under the stars and enjoy Jazz Night at King Street.
August 17 – Elderdog Butterfly Release
ElderDog Canada Lunenburg County Pawd invites you to join them for their 7th Annual Eldergdog Butterfly Release. Pay tribute to a special dog in your life and enjoy an afternoon in the company of dogs and dog-loving people. Release a butterfly in memory, bring a plant for the memorial garden, learn about milkweed and butterfly gardens. Bring your dogs, bring a friend, everyone is welcome. August 17 – Music on the Riverbank Series with Darren Arsenault Trio
The Town of Bridgewater welcomes back Music on the Riverbank. Join them this Saturday at beautiful King Street Court in Downtown Bridgewater, featuring the musical stylings of the Darren Arsenault Trio. Music begins at 2:00 pm and admission is free. So come on out and enjoy this family-friendly event; you’re not going to want to miss it!
August 17 – New Ross Community Fair
Head to the New Ross Community Fairgrounds for two days of Horse and Ox pulls, flower show, handicrafts, bingo, stage entertainment and more! Daily Admission is $6 for Adults $2 for 12 to 5 – kids under 5 are free. Dinner and Supper available both days!

August 18 – Mersey Stillwater Paddle
Discover Kejimkujik in Voyageur style and attend the Mersey Stillwater Paddle. Climb aboard the Voyageur Canoe for a tour with two skilled Parks Canada guides. Your personal guides are windows into the natural and cultural world of Keji and will share humorous stories as they serve you a delicious treat and refreshing Mersey Tea. August 18 – Acadian Culture Celebration Dance
Come and join the Association du Centre Communautaire de la Rive-Sud for Acadian Day celebrations. Live Concert and dancing at the Lunenburg Fisheries Museum. They will be on the dock from Noon to 5pm.
August 18 – Catahoula Brown at St. Marks Place
St. Mark’s Place presents a special Sunday evening with Catahoula Brown. His live show includes a main dish of mouth-watering blues, with a side order of dry spicy humour, and his own unique down home charm for dessert. Tickets: $20 each.
August 18 – Briana’s Art Activities
Come out form 1pm – 5pm and make your own Dream Catcher or Painted Feathers with Briana at her Art Activities event. Hosted by Rossignol Cultural Centre and Sherman Hines Photography Museum, admission is $5, all ages are welcome.
August 18 – Yoga & Plant Walk at the MARC
The North Mountain Animal Sanctuary is hosting Yoga and Plant Walk Fundraiser at the MARC. The event will include a fusion flow yoga class led by Donna Montanchez of White Light Yoga, and a plant walk guided by Clinical Herbalist Amanda Dainow of Singing Nettles Herbal Clinic. Cost is a $40 donation, snack provided, please bring a packed lunch.
August 18 – 14th Annual Log-A-Load For Kids Fundraiser
The Harmony Ball Fields in Caledonia is home to this years LOB Ball Tournament fundraiser for IWK Children’s Hospital. Softball, auctions, raffles, canteen and a 50/50 draw make it fun for the whole family.
