It has been wonderful to see brand new events that have been started due to COVID-19. Outdoor movies, self-guided walking tours and lawn-chair festivals just to name a few. It has been equally wonderful to see old favourites make a return like Ross Farm Museum which opened last week, the Elderdog Annual Butterfly Release and of course live music at the Lunenburg & Chester Bandstands. There is always something to do, let’s see what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend.
What’s Happening on the South Shore Friday Aug 14th, 2020
Aug 14 – High Liner Free Swims! (Lunenburg)
High Liner Fine Foods is sponsoring Free Swims on the four Fridays of August. Head to the Lunenburg & District Swimming Pool from 1:30-3:30pm and beat the heat.
Aug 14 – Ross Farm Museum is now OPEN (New Ross)
Ross Farm Museum is open once again after working hard to create a safe space for you and their staff. Visits must be booked ahead of time, and can be arrange via their website. They ask that you please take a moment to discover what you need to know before you make your visit.
Aug 14 – Friday @ the Fort (La Have)
Fort Point Museum invites you to Friday @ the Fort. Enjoy live music and a delicious home cooked meal on our scenic grounds along the LaHave River! Supper will be served at 6pm or upon guest arrival. Local musician Steve Keith will be performing from 6:30-8:15pm. Tickets are $15/person and must be booked in advance by calling 902-688-1632 or visiting the museum.
Tickets are limited due to COVID regulations. This Friday’s meal will be a choice of meat or veggie lasagna, salad, and dessert!
Aug 14 – Kristen Martell live at FirkenStein Brewing (Bridgewater)
Join Mahone Bay songstress Kristen Martell for a night of stories and songs, this Friday at FirkenStein Brewing. Including music from her recent album ‘Coming Home’. Anyone who has pondered the meaning of it all will find something to relate to in her songs. Music starts at 8pm.
Aug 14 – Dynamic live at Bayport Pub (Riverport)
The boys of Dynamic are back for another evening of great music, food and folk at the Bayport Pub this Friday. Band goes on at 7pm. For reservations call (902)764-2404.
Aug 14 – Ocean Blue Jazz Quartet live at St. Marks Place (Middle La Have)
St. Marks Place is pleased to present the Ocean Blue Jazz Quartet this Friday from 7:30-9:30pm. The members of Ocean Blue Jazz Quartet met while playing in the Tuesday Night Big Band in Halifax. Playing their our own arrangements of standards with a few originals added to the mix their repertoire includes music from the 1940s to present day with tunes to suit a variety of tastes – swing, Latin, soul-jazz. Seating limit to 34, face masks are mandatory and no beverages are allowed. Tickets are $20, Email to reserve your seat.
Aug 14 – Irish Sessions at Lane’s Privateer Inn (Liverpool)
Join Lane’s Privateer Inn for their bi-weekly Irish Sessions. An evening of toe tapping traditional Irish music performed in the “session” format round the table. Aug 15 – “Green Bay at the Winery” Art Show and Sale (Petite Riviere)
Green Bay and Area Artists will be at the Petite Riviere Winery for their annual Art Show and Sale this weekend. Featuring Artists : Mary Smith, Patti Barkhouse-Young, Pam Wells, Donna Wentzell, Faye Walters Mossman, Sally Oliver. They are taking extra precautions to keep you safe this year while shopping at the sale. They are also offering select pieces for sale on their facebook page for those that aren’t able to make it in person. There will also be a daily draw for a wonderful piece of local art.
Aug 15 – Pique-Nique Acadien at Fort Point Museum (La Have)
Association du Centre Communautaire de la Rive-Sud invites you to join them for a Pique-Nique Acadien this Saturday from 11am-2pm. Bring your own picnic & drinks, plates, beach umbrella and joyful spirit and enjoy live music from wonderful local musicians. We kindly ask you to please respect the Ministry of Health’s guidelines. Aug 15 – Martin’s River Fire Department 50th Anniversary Celebration (Martin’s River)
The Martin’s River Fire Department invites you to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. All ages are welcome to come. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, water, pop will be on site along with bathroom services and hand washing stations. Please remember we ask social distancing maintained and we ask you to wear a mask.
Aug 15 – 34th Annual Chapin Show (The Ovens)
There is still outdoor seating available for Saturday’s 34th annual Chapin Show at The Ovens Natural Park. Steve Chapin will be presenting a career retrospective of Chapin Family music in two intimate seatings, at 3pm and 6:30. Call (902) 766-4621 to book a table while still available!
Aug 15 – Elderdog Annual Butterfly Release (Lunenburg)
Thankfully this years Elderdog Annual Butterfly Release is a go as the event is outside there is lots of space for social distancing. Each year they gather to remember and honour our dogs and dog loving people who have passed away. Please join them for an afternoon of fellowship and remembrance. Bring a friend. Butterflies to be released may be ordered online.
Aug 15 – Lawn Chair Festival (Shelburne)
The Osprey Arts Centre is happy that the Lawn Chair Festival is back this Saturday at 2pm. This week join Sahara Jane and Ken Shorley for an afternoon of great music and community. The shows will be delivered with all social distancing and mask wearing standards upheld. Bring your lawn chairs or stand as no seating will be provided.
Aug 15 – Sam Wentzell live at Nosy Crow Bites & Brews (Mahone Bay)
This Saturday Sam Wentzell will be performing at The Nosy Crow Bites & Brews from 2-5pm. While you’re there enjoy some delicious food from their menu, coffee, tea. Or since they are licensed why not a cold beer, cider or cooler to go with some acoustic blues rock?
Aug 15 – Saturdays in the Park (Lunenburg)
Saturdays in the Park continues this weekend with a performance by Don Ross. Saturdays in the Park presented by the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society and take place Saturdays through the summer, 2-3pm at the Bandstand in Lunenburg.
Aug 15 – Drive In Movie “Toy Story 4” at The MARC (Dayspring)
District of Lunenburg Recreation is excited to be hosting a Drive In Movie this Saturday. Pack the car with friends, family and most importantly, snacks. The movie starts at dusk, admission is free, donation to ProKids are encouraged. Please keep checking their facebook page for updates.

Aug 15 – South Shore Drive In presents ” Raiders of the Lost Ark ” (Mill Village)
South Shore’s Drive-In movie this Saturday is “Raiders of the Lost Ark“ In 1936, American archaeologist Indiana Jones braves an ancient booby-trapped temple in Peru to retrieve a golden idol. After suppurating various challenges, including traitorous guides, he is confronted by rival archaeologist René Belloq and the indigenous Hovito people. Show time is at dusk, with parking opening at 9 pm. Concessions and washroom are on site, and admission is $10 per vehicle. Aug 15 – Darren Arsenault live at Osprey Nest Public House (Petite Riviere)
Head to the Osprey Nest Public House this Saturday as Darren Arsenault play on the patio. The double decker patio allows for plenty of social distancing, and the kitchen offers incredible food, sounds like a great evening.

LaHave River Books invites you to an afternoon book signing with Author Syr Ruus. Ms. Ruus will be there from 1-3pm signing her latest book “Walls of the Cave” join her for “a chat, a sweet cake from the bakery, a browse in this most beautiful and welcoming bookstore”.
Aug 16 – Black Currant U-Pick (Lunenburg)
Dragonfly Farm will be once again having their Black Currant U-pick this weekend. Open 10am-5 pm Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, located at 121 First Peninsula Rd, Lunenburg. $5 a pint. A great part of what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend.
Aug 16 – Yard Sale for Beirut (Lunenburg)
Lunenburg Community Consignment is holding a Yard Sale for Beirut in their parking lot at 121 Pelham Rd. this Sunday from 11am-2pm. All sales by donation and all proceeds going to the Lebanese Red Cross in support of people suffering from the recent explosion in Beirut. Nova Scotia understands big explosions, so let’s help out the folks in Beirut.
Aug 16 – Celtic Sessions at Saltbox Brewery (Mahone Bay)
Celtic Sessions continue at the Saltbox Brewery. From 2-4 join Buchanans House of Music for a lovely Celtic music filled afternoon on the patio!

Live music on the Lunenburg Waterfront continues this Sunday with John Barr & Hank Middleton. Bring your lawn chair and join this two talented gents from 2-4pm. A free, family friendly outside event on Lunenburg’s working waterfront presented by Develop NS.
Aug 16 – Music at the Chester Band Stand (Chester)
The Market Boys take the stage this Sunday as par to the Chester Bandstand Summer Concert Series. Music starts at 7pm, grab your lawn chair, snacks and blankets (just in case) and enjoy the evening with great views and music.
Aug 16 – Self Guided Walking Tours of Bridgewater (Bridgewater)
The Bridgewater Heritage Advisory Committee, in partnership with DesBrisay Museum, is excited to offer two new self-guided walking tours for both King Street and Pleasant Street. Traditionally, we have been able to offer guided walking tours throughout Bridgewater during the summer months. However, given the precautions the public is being asked to take in the COVID-19 era, we are instead offering a self-guided option that has been carefully developed by our talented staff as a means of letting you get to know your community and its historic built heritage a little better. We hope you enjoy these self-guided tours, both available online and in physical copies that are loaned out at DesBrisay Museum.

Operating from historic Lunenburg, Seaweed Tours offers a variety of scenic storytelling tours. Hop on the absolutely adorable bus and explore the nooks and crannies of Lunenburg county like the locals do. Tours are offered seven days a week. This is the greatest time of the year to visit your local Farmers Market. The tables are just exploding with local produce and flowers. A great way to spend part of your weekend and support local.
