Welcome 2020! As the South Shore eases it’s way into the new year, we are excited to keep an eye on what’s happening. With all kinds of winter activities, sporting events, music, art and a festival or two lined up for the next couple of months, it is going to be a great winter. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s check out what’s happening on the South Shore this weekend shall we?
What’s Happening Friday January 10, 2020
Jan 10 – Gigantic Book Sale (Pentz)
The West Side United Church UCW is holding a Giant Book Sale this weekend in Pentz. All books are $1.00 and 50% of the proceeds will go to support the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society. The perfect place to get some books for the inevitable snow days that are coming our way.
Jan 10 – South Shore Lumberjacks (Bridgewater)
The South Shore Lumberjacks are back in action for the first time this year, this time against the Summerside Western Capitals. The action starts at 5:00 pm, and it promises to be a fantastic night of hockey. Summerside has been at the top of the league standings since the start of the season, and the Lumberjacks are looking to prove that the early success they had this season was no fluke. Head down to the LCLC and cheer them on. Tickets are $12 for Adults $7 for Youth 6-17 and Free for kids five and under.
Jan 10 – One Meter Up live at the Port Grocer (Port Medway)
Friday Pub Nights continue at the Port Grocer, this week featuring One Meter Up. Head to the Port for good food, good fun and good company. Music starts at 6:00pm, a great way to start the new year.
Jan 10 – Open Mic Night (Bridgewater)
Art Happening Bridgewater is hosting their January Open Mic Night this Friday starting at 7pm. New performers and old favourites graced the space in December for some festive fun and they are looking forward to another great Friday night! This is a free event, though donations are very much appreciated, so feel free to toss some change in the vase on your way through the door. Coffee, tea, and gluten-free date squares are provided. The rest is up to you!
Jan 10 – Deck the Halls Art Show and Sale (Liverpool)
Today is the last day to catch the Deck the Halls Art Show and Sale. Taking place in the Town Hall Arts & Cultural Centre, from 11am – 4pm discover works by Tom Alway, Peter Blais, Marshall Burgess, Matthew Collins, Bev Crouse, Dennis Curran, William Downey, Marilyn Kellough, Marg Millard, Roger Savage and Sharon Wadsworth-Smith.
Jan 10 – Irish Session at Lane’s (Liverpool)
Lane’s Privateer Inn hosts the first of their Irish Sessions this Friday at 7pm. Join them for an evening of toe tapping traditional Irish music performed in the “session” format round the table. Jan 10 – Phil Ramey live at FirkinStein Brewing (Bridgewater)
FirkinStein Brewing is happy to Phil Ramey back to get your weekend going. Music starts at 8pm, head on down, sit back ad enjoy Phil’s never ending playlist of hits!
Jan 10 – Friday Night Fever (Liverpool)
The Liverpool Royal Canadian Legion welcomes you to another Friday Night Fever. This week, dance the night away with Top Notch. The fun starts at 9pm, $8.00 entry fee, door prizes and 50/50 draw, members and guests welcome.
Jan 10 – The Strange Valentines live at Saltbox (Mahone Bay)
Saltbox Brewery in Mahone Bay welcomes The Strange Valentines this Friday. Head down for some great music, drinks and start the weekend off right. Music starts at 7pm and as always, no cover.
What’s Happening on Saturday January 11, 2020
Jan 11 – Winter Frolic at Ross Farm (New Ross)
Winter is fun at Ross Farm Museum, this weekend as they host their Winter Frolic 9am-5pm both Saturday and Sunday. Join them for a sleigh ride, and enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate made over an open fire. Visit the farm workshop and sample some homemade ice cream. Bring your toboggan; they have a fabulous coasting hill. They also have snowshoes available for you to borrow, or you can bring your own skis and snowshoes. Fingers crossed the snow will stick around!
Jan 11 – Mandala Painting for Adult & Child (Bridgewater)
Free to Be Yoga with Christy and The Salt Spa & Wellness Centre invite you to join them this Saturday at 12:30pm for a Mandala Rock Painting Class for Adult + Child! This workshop will be a fun and creative way to connect with a special child in your life! The workshop includes a tour of the spa, 2 hours for rock painting, and an optional 45 minute yoga class. Jan 11 – Blockhouse Farmers Market (Blockhouse)
Blockhouse Farmers Market will be welcoming the new year in with fresh veg and vegan treats from Bayport Home Farm, pastured meats, honey and preserves from R&R Corkum farms and Fermented goodies from Mother Culture Ferments and freshly brewed Just Us Coffee. Open Saturdays througout the winter from 9am – 1pm, located in the green roof portable at the South Shore Waldorf School.
Jan 11 – Learn Line Dancing with Sandra (Bridgewater)
The DesBrisay Museum invites you to Learn Line Dancing with Sandra. Grab your dancing shoes and join Sandra Mailman, this Saturday at 2 pm, at the museum, for a fun afternoon – they’ll provide the music and dance step sheets. Admission free, donations appreciated.
Jan 11 – Duncan Fisco live at the Legion (Mahone Bay)
Head over to the Mahone Bay Legion and hang out with Duncan Fisco this Saturday. Enjoy some great live music, dancing & drinks. Classic R&B, Pop and Rock from years gone by. The fun starts at 8pm, $10 cover (or pay what you can).
Jan 11 – “Cats” the motion picture at the Astor Theatre (Liverpool)
The Astor Theatre presents “Cats” the motion picture this weekend. Based on the Andrew Lloyd Weber play, follow the tale of the Jellicles Cats as they decide who will get a new life. Tickets are $10 available at the door.
Jan 11 – Chester Charity Hockey Challenge (Chester)
The Chester She-Devils and the Chester Mens Hockey league are coming together for The Chester Charity Hockey Challenge. This 2 day hockey event includes a women’s division of 4 teams and mens division of 4 teams. All the funds raised will be donated to the Nunez and Regan families to help cover their medical costs. Jan 12 – Good Vibrations Drumming Group (Lunenburg)
Second Story Women’s Centre hosts it’s weekly Good Vibrations Drumming Group. Drumming is proven to help reduce stress and anxiety, increase energy levels and mobility, form friendships, and provide a lot of fun.
No experience needed, drums are provided & personal drums are welcome. All of their programs and services are FREE!
Jan 12 – Cinema Sunday at Chester Playhouse Theatre (Chester)
The Chester Playhouse Theatre invites you to their Cinema Sunday. Bring the kids to the 1:30pm showing of Pixar’s Inside Out or grab your pals and take in Joker, starring Golden Globe winner Joaquin Phoenix at 4pm. Tickets are $10 adult and $8 Youth and are available at the door.
Jan 12 – Public Skate at the LCLC (Bridgewater)
The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre hosts a public skate every Sunday from 5:30pm – 6:20pm. Adult: $4 / Youth: $3 /Family (up to 4 people): $10. For all skaters 19 and under, it is mandatory to wear a helmet. If you do not own a helmet, they do have some “loaner” helmets. Don’t have your own skates but want to give it a try? Thanks to the United Way of Lunenburg County and Vic’s Skate Sharpening, there some skates that you can borrow (not all sizes but they are working on it!)
Jan 12 – Sunday Afternoon Art Movie featuring “Maudie” (Lunenburg)
The Lunenburg Foundation for the Arts presents “Maudie” as their Sunday Afternoon Art Movie. Join them at the LAMP Auditorium, movie starts at 2pm, admission is by donation, refreshments will be served.
South Shore Museums
The South Shore is home to a number of wonderful museums to discover with the family or just by yourself. We are lucky that a few of these museums stay open throughout the winter months, as sometimes you want to enjoy the season from inside.
We have put together a list of those museums who have winter weekend hours for you, grab your calendar and plan your visit.
Black Loyalist Heritage Centre (Shelburne) – Fridays 9am – 4pm
The DesBrisay Museum (Bridgewater) – Friday and Saturday 1pm – 5pm
Ross Farm Museum (New Ross) – Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9am – 5pm
Queens County Museum (Liverpool) – Friday and Saturday 9am – 4:30pm
