“We should go somewhere…or before you know it, it’s going to be September 1st…and summer’s going to be over.”
These were my husbands words the previous week while we were sitting by the bonfire. My husband is self-employed and doesn’t really take a vacation, so the best we can usually do is a long weekend…if we’re lucky. While we love our South Shore Scenery and all the beautiful beaches here, sometimes you need to just get away. My daughter just casually said, “Why don’t we go to PEI?” So we did. 😉
I started looking at Airbnb’s and found us 2 different spots to rent. We have a couple of bunkies on Airbnb, but have never actually stayed at an Airbnb. We thought as Airbnb hosts, it would also be a good idea to experience it as a guest. I asked a friend for highlights from their PEI trip last summer and a rough plan was made. We mostly just figured it out as we went. It was perfect. 🙂
After arriving via the Confederation Bridge, we were headed to Mount Stewart. I just punched the address into google maps and it took us through every back road and farm field to get to our Airbnb. It was beautiful…but hilarious. By the time we arrived….a little after 7:00pm…we were starving. Our host told us to head down to Richard’s Seafoods in the National Park…we only had 45 minutes…and watch the sunset at Covehead Harbour Lighthouse.
PEI National Park
This never would have happened if google maps would have taken us on a direct route, because our plan was to stop and eat on the way. Watching the sunset along the Gulf Shore Parkway, just behind the Covehead Harbour Lighthouse….was stunning.
After what felt like a long travel day, this was the absolute best way to end it.
There were several people on the beach that night just to watch/photograph the sunset.
Covehead Harbour Lighthouse
“The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is a heritage lighthouse. It is important to the local fishing community and to recreational boaters as a guiding light to the entrance of Covehead Bay. The current lighthouse is an important symbol of the island’s maritime heritage as one of the most photographed lighthouses in Prince Edward Island.”
I took my blanket down to the beach and after taking some photos, we sat and tried to just be in the moment. It’s amazing that you can drive a little over 4 hours away, but feel like you are in a completely different world. The sunset at Covehead Harbour Lighthouse, was a definite highlight of the trip…and most likely my entire summer.
I’m planning on doing a 3-part series on our trip to PEI. Stay tuned for our next post on our hike on the Greenwich Dunes Trail…which was also incredible! 🙂
