Sunday Morning Coffee

Sunday mornings I usually take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. Thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, maybe you will enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee too.

Jenna has “spoken to me” again with this post. I’ve long said that since the start of social media, I don’t enjoy Christmas day as much as I used to. Inevitably my kids will be telling me who got the “iPhone (pick a number)…before we even begin. I feel like they are going to be disappointed no matter what we have for them, as there’s always someone who’s gotten something else amazing. They don’t say that, but that’s how I internalize it as a parent.

Thanksgiving. I like Thanksgiving. It’s all about the food, family and being thankful. Since every holiday can’t be Thanksgiving, let’s all try to be mindful of what we putting out to the world.

Perhaps the shift in the way we schedule our lives has a part to play in this increase in celebration. Our lives are more and more broken into segments of time – work, school, gym, sports, volunteering. Even our children’s play time with others is often carefully marked on the calendar weeks in advance! This creates a level of anticipation for everyday milestones that necessitates bigger markers of time, such as holidays, needing an ever-increasing level of excitement to make them stand out. But I don’t think the desire to celebrate in elaborate ways is completely a new thing. What’s new is how we share what happens in our homes in such public ways and the level of competition that creates.

LighthouseNow: Group wants to replace pavement with green space

This is a cool project! Removing concrete and installing greenery in its place to lessen the effects of storm water run off. Green Communities Canada has finished 21 sites across Canada, and in working with Bluenose Coastal Action, this site in Bridgewater would be the organization’s first in Atlantic Canada! This is a win-win for both the community and the environment.

The Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation is organizing a community event this spring to replace a section of pavement in Bridgewater with green space. The Depaving Paradise project aims to remove concrete from the old Baptist Church property on King Street and install greenery in its place to lessen the effects of stormwater runoff.

  1. Great initiative from Bluenose Action Foundation “Depaving Paradise” project. I remember when Joni Mitchell sang “Big Yellow Taxi” in 1970 ….. “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot”. That song frequently comes to mind when I look at the farmland in Cookville, which was paved over to create the Walmart shopping area. I wonder where the deer went ?

    • I love that Joni Mitchell song Shirley…well really I love anything Joni Mitchell sings. 😉 I still see the deer by Wal-Mart….they just have less space to roam.
