Sunday mornings I usually take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. Thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, maybe you will enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee as well.
Why Canadians should care about Facebook’s fake news problem
I saw a lot of this during the US election cycle with people sharing fake news headlines like they were true. The problem is a lot of those people believe they are true. People get their news…or links to it…from Facebook. Mark Zuckerburg might not want to take full responsibility for it yet, but it needs to be recognized. It also doesn’t help that the US now has a President who spits out falsehoods as if they are true. Anyway, it’s time to start paying attention…to some real news sites, or as the article suggests, go right to the phone and call your local representatives and see where they stand on issues that concern you.
You may have come across one of these fake stories, like the one reporting that the pope endorsed Trump (he didn’t), in your Facebook feed or Google searches. These stories looked legit, even when they came from made-up news sites like the Denver Guardian, which bills itself as “Denver’s oldest news source.” (It’s not.) Scarier still: In the run up to the election, more readers shared or liked fake news stories than real ones from traditional media.

Grandma Texts Wrong Teen About Thanksgiving, Invites Him Anyway | The Huffington Post
Now, how about a lighter, feel good story? OK, I think we all know a “grandma” we can see this happening to…LOL! The fact that she accidentally texted the wrong person, invited him anyway, AND he plans on going to Thanksgiving Dinner with them…just makes me smile. 🙂
We’re certainly thankful for this hilarious holiday story. An accidental text about Thanksgiving plans that turned into an actual invite has gone viral — receiving over 180,000 re-tweets and 300,000 likes on Twitter. And the tale is as sweet as candied yams. On Nov. 15, 17-year-old Jamal Hinton from Chandler, Arizona got looped into a group text. The text included two unknown numbers and an invite to Thanksgiving. Confused, Hinton asked who they were. The texter responded with: “Your grandma.”

Thanks for joining me for a morning coffee, Enjoy the day!
I loved every bit of this post! In all of my social media consumption, I totally missed that Chatelaine article which was excellent. I also loved the Grandma story and the B&B was definitely fuel for the imagination. All a great addition to my Sunday morning!
Glad you enjoyed it Carrie…xo
Glad you are back posting, Jennifer. I have missed your Blog. I did pour another coffee and read. I do want to say I see this locally on social media , too. Well educated people posting websites as news sources, recycling articles( check the date) and using published opinions as news sources. Social media content is much like a refrigerator… leftovers, expired dates and fresh product!
I’ve been posting fairly regularly Suzanne….you may just be missing it. Glad you enjoyed it this morning. 🙂
