Sunday mornings I usually take time to catch up on stories I may not have time to read through the week. Thought I would share some that caught my eye this week, maybe you will enjoy them with your Sunday morning coffee as well.
I’m not going to lie, this was a tough week. I was so excited to watch the US election results come in on Tuesday night with my family. I was particularly excited to watch with my 13 year daughter so we could be part of the historic event of witnessing the first female being elected President. Instead, as the evening went on, my daughter told me she thought I should stop watching because she was worried I was going to have an anxiety attack. As it became more and more apparent that the pundits and pollsters had gotten it so wrong, my stomach started to ache and my heart was feeling tight, my face was grimacing in “pain”. It was ….shocking. Having to tell my daughter the next morning that this sexist, racist, ignorant, hate mongering, unqualified buffoon, had beat Hillary Clinton, was heartbreaking. What sort of message does this send to girls and women everywhere?
I am still stunned. I avoided media coverage for a day or two following for self-preservation. There have been many articles written and these are a few that caught my eye.
For women, a long-awaited moment followed by a gut-punch of defeat – The Globe and Mail
It said best by Hillary herself….”There are more seasons to come and more work to do.”
It was supposed to be a celebration, one of those where-were-you-when evenings to reminisce about later. But by midnight, Girvan was solemnly offering blue-frosted cupcakes sprinkled with glass candy to her female friends as they sat despondently on the couch, watching CNN report that Pennsylvania was swinging back to Donald Trump, leaving the glass ceiling solidly intact. “There were tears. Someone literally broke out in hives,” she says. “By the end, I was eyeing the hard liquor, and wondering who I should medicate.”

Grief & Loss After the Election | World of Psychology
I know how I felt after Tuesday nights loss, but at least I live in Canada. I think I would be struggling with down right fear if I was a US citizen. I still do have some fear based on the uncertainty of this type of dictator style US President elect being our neighbour. I know a lot of people will be having legitimate mental health struggles following this week. This article gives advice on actions you can take to try to alleviate it somewhat. Healing takes time, but we will get there. It may even, just make us stronger.
Large groups of people were grieving yesterday, trying to come to terms with the failure to elect the first woman president. How do you cope with grief and loss after a contentious election like this? People are upset and we can detect their dismay through analytics on the traffic to Psych Central. Traffic to our 5 Stages of Grief & Loss page was up over 210 percent the day after the election. It is trending higher today as well, as more and more people try and cope with the loss they feel.

My sharing in this weekly post are generally positive, feel good stories. That will return next week, I promise. 🙂
Now, for any of the many Americans who crashed our Canadian immigration website Tuesday night, the “You Could Live Here…” section may take on a new significance. It’s not only Cape Breton that is lovely. 😉
