Sunday mornings I usually take some time to read stories I may not have time for through the week. I plan to share some of my favourite stories here so that you might catch up on them as you enjoy a Sunday Morning Coffee!
Junked Toronto couch reborn as a stylish leather handbag – CBC.ca | Metro Morning
Without a doubt, this was one of my favorite stories of the past week. I have been a fan of Pip Robins work for a while now. Gillian Hyde is the Nova Scotia born designer behind the brand who now lives in Toronto… I think she may have actually even grown up on the South Shore…? She creates absolutely beautiful hand bags and accessories which she sells on her Etsy shop and at various craft and designer shows throughout the year.
I follow her on Instagram, which is where she first posted about cutting the leather off this discarded couch, getting caught, and how she planned to anonymously leave the owner a handmade clutch, with a thank you note. Of course in today’s social media circles, it took less than 8 hours for the owner to figure out who left it, and then quickly became a new story.
This is up cycling at its finest. I loved Gillian and Pip Robins before this…I love her even more now.
Ever wonder what happens to those forlorn-looking couches cast out at the curbside? Many — perhaps most — end up in the dump. But thanks to the kindness, ingenuity and bravado of one Toronto business owner and designer, one castaway leather couch became a series of handmade leather clutches in a story that delighted Metro Morning listeners today.

The secret to spring cleaning: don’t just organize your stuff – get rid of it | Life and style | The Guardian
Oh my…this speaks to me. I have been feeling the effects of spring fever, which leads me to want to organize and purge. I spent last weekend tackling my master bedroom, which can become a dumping ground of sorts..and in the process found a bag of Christmas gifts for my father in law, I completely forgot about/couldn’t find. Yesterday I cleaned out 1 large junk drawer…which is now almost EMPTY!This feels good, but also a tad ridiculous. Each time I take a large load of items to the Dawson Daisy to donate, but in the last year I have been so much more conscious of what I bring into our home. I love a good yard sale, and a trip to Frenchy’s, but many times now I come away empty handed…and I feel good about it. I’ve been thinking about how things could look and feel if I spent every Saturday for the next several months purging. Then I think how did this happen and what a colossal waste of time! But, we have a large house…with 5 of us living in it…it gets filled up…and then just creates stress and waste. When you start focusing on purging and spending large amounts of time doing it, you become much more selective about what you bring into your home. That’s been my reality anyway. It’s a work in progress, but I am trying to stay focused on it. This article I found helpful, and spot on.
We continue buying things to make us feel good but the overwhelming accumulation of these items in our homes is precisely what ends up making us feel stressed, depressed and overwhelmed. Then, after a winter spent cooped up with all of our stuff and all of our negative feelings about it, we try to fix the situation by purchasing more things to contain and organize the first batch of things.
You Could Live Here! – Sunday Morning Coffee
370 Medway River Road, Charleston Nova Scotia Property Details
Maybe I am meant to live in Queens County? I am drawn to so many properties down that way, and this one is no exception. This have make-over written all over it, and it even mentions that it needs updating and is “priced accordingly”. But for that price, you could invest in some upgrades and still have a modest priced home. Anyone have any contacts with HGTV? This would make an ideal Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines. 😉 Lush fields, apple and plum trees as well as grape vines…I may have to go on a road trip today to Charleston. 😉
This property is listed with Exit Realty Interlake Liverpool.
