We’re excited to be launching a brand new series on Simple Local Life…one that people have been asking for …and one I think you’re going to enjoy…called South Shore Scenery! There are so many beautiful areas to explore and visit up and down the South Shore…beaches, trails, parks, museums, lighthouses, off the beaten path treasures, etc. The first destination was an easy one for us to pick….it’s one of our favourites…Crescent Beach, near Petite Riviere. Welcome to South Shore Scenery-Crescent Beach, Lunenburg County.
We are so fortunate here on the South Shore to have beautiful beaches and shoreline up and down this side of the province. The fact that many sandy beaches are a short drive for most of us, makes living or visiting here, so worthwhile. When we’re talking beaches, Crescent Beach, down near Petite Riviere , is always a great place to start.
If you come down the Lahave River, you can stop into the lovely Lahave Bakery and pick up a coffee or lunch. Coming the other way, you drive into Petite Riviere, past the Rissers Beach Provincial Park, and then quickly come to the sign directing you to a little piece of heaven. 😉
As soon as you pull into the road and then park above the beach…you feel the stresses of the day washing out with each wave. There’s just something about the beach and the sound of the surf, that is so relaxing.
Crescent Beach is about 2 km long and is one of the few…possibly only…beaches in Nova Scotia that you can actually drive on. It’s very common in the summer to see cars driving up and down the beach. The nice part of being able to drive onto the beach, is that it makes the beach accessible for those with mobility issues. Parking on the beach, pulling out your chair and watching the waves…how lovely!
I prefer walking the beach and in fact, find winter beach walks to be so refreshing! I was at Crescent Beach this past week and it was an amazingly beautiful February day! I had almost the whole place to myself and enjoyed every minute.
If you’re taking the family there is lots of things to do. Climbing the rocks…exploring the sand dunes, or beach combing for treasures…will keep you busy and entertained. I was lucky enough to find 2 pieces of beach glass during my visit. 🙂
There is a Friends of Crescent Beach, Green Bay and Area Society, whose objective is to “foster the growth, preservation and maintenance of the flora, fauna, migratory and non-migratory birds and the habitat, the beach, sand dunes, marsh land and mud flats above and below the tidal waters of Green Bay, including Crescent Beach, Dublin Bay and LaHave Islands, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, as well as the adjacent lands.”
The Crescent Beach sand bar connects some of the LaHave Islands to the mainland. Before the paved road existed behind the dunes, the beach was primarily used as a path to and from George Island which is part of the LaHave Islands.
In the summer Crescent Beach is popular for swimming, kite surfing and boogie boarding. Beautiful white sand, blue ocean and only 20 minutes from the town of Bridgewater. Crescent Beach is a must see for anyone taking in some south shore scenery.
We all love our beach, but we do ask that you don’t explore the sand dunes by foot. They offer protection for Crescent Beach. There are a couple of marked paths to go between the backside road and the beach, but The Friends of Crescent Beach Green Bay and Area Society ask that visitors stay off the dunes so we have out beloved beach for all to enjoy for many years to come. You’re absolutely right Jennifer, it’s a great beach to walk in any season, and often you have it to yourself in the winter. You certainly chose an amazing day for your photos. Lots of sunshine! 🙂 Can I put in a plug here for our website? crescentbeach.ca By the way, I really enjoy your blog!
Good point Deanna! I actually have linked to your group in the post…and shared a quote from them about protecting the area. 🙂 I love Crescent Beach almost as much in the winter as the summer. Almost…;)
I read that quote. Nice! I like the beach in the winter, but I LOVE it in the summer!
Oh my goodness, what a GORGEOUS beach day in February! You couldn’t have picked a nicer day to go. It looks so fresh and invigorating! Makes me wish beach walks. I’ll have to start taking them in the winter too! 🙂
PS – Cute car!
It was an AMAZING beach day in February…crazy winter! PS. You would look cute driving around in that EcoSport Myra…:)
