Peasant’s Pantry-Eat Well in New Ross

New Ross is the hidden gem of a community, nestled between the South Shore and the Annapolis Valley. Many are of course familiar with Ross Farm and community events including the New Ross Community Fair and the Christmas Festival. Like any community, they can become well known for their food and New Ross is becoming a destination for the delicious local and homemade offerings available at Peasant’s Pantry.

Peasant's Pantry

Peasant’s Pantry started in 2011 with a home-based processing facility to make specialty meats/charcuterie using local meat and no fillers, focusing on traditional recipes and high quality. Originally selling at farmers markets, Joseph and Julie Crocker realized they needed staff and more space to keep up with demand. They purchased and renovated the former location of The Highwayman Restaurant, which had been vacant on Highway 12 in New Ross for some time.

The vision was to relocate and expand our business as a traditional deli: continuing to practice nose-to-tail butchery to produce our specialty meats, but also to offer butcher cuts and provide a menu for eat-in and take-out, made from scratch in-house with an emphasis on local ingredients.

Peasants Pantry offers casual, high quality food. Like the specialty meats, the menu features variety and is made in-house from scratch with emphasis on local ingredients. Earlier this year Joseph built a wood oven and they now offer made-to-order wood-fired breads and pizzas.

Typically they have some seating available inside and a few picnic tables outside, however due to Covid regulations, they are currently open Thursday- Sunday from 11-7 with their full menu available, for Take-Away only.

We use traditional methods and locally pastured meat to make our own raw and ready-to-eat specialty meats. All cutting, curing and smoking is done in-house. We don’t use fillers, giving our products a better taste and texture and resulting in most items being gluten-free.

I love seeing people bring their vision to life, continuing to grow, expand and serve. It’s clear when you spend time with Joseph and Julie that they are passionate about what they do…creating amazing food with quality local ingredients…and they look like they are having a lot of fun doing it. 🙂

I can’t stop thinking about how incredible this lunch was…and am already planning my next visit. 😉

Plan a day trip to New Ross and include a stop at Peasants Pantry. Pick up lunch, or a Charcuterie Board, and grab some sausages, smoked meat, bacon or air dried salami to take home. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s so nice to see a touch of Europe in the prosciutto and other items. I live in Ontario but grew up in new Ross and I always miss these things when I come back home. Looks great. Congratulations.
