Well what can I say, I was back in Mahone Bay last week and loving every minute of it. The sun was shining, birds were singing, everyone seemed happy knowing spring is just around the corner. I was meeting someone at The Barn where we grabbed the last 2 seats available, and over a delicious Americano, discussed ideas for future collaboration. After a great conversation, some of which was spent sharing our mutual admiration for Mahone Bay, we wrapped up and headed our own way. It was almost lunch time and I thought I should find a spot to grab a bite and do a little more work. It was the perfect time to finally go visit The Biscuit Eater Cafe and Bookstore.
How have I gone this long without going to this delightful, warm and inviting cafe and bookstore? The Biscuit Eater has recently changed owners and I’ve seen photos of their book filled rooms and posts about a Community Potluck, had me convinced I had to check it out myself. Oh my…I was charmed from the minute I walked in!
The Biscuit Eater is discreetly tucked away on Orchard Street, in one of Mahone Bay’s oldest buildings. Walking inside you immediately feel the warmth of the space and smell the delicious scents of fresh brewed coffee and biscuits baking. Mmmm….the biscuits! For lunch I decided on the B.E. which is a roast chicken, spinach, brie and cranberry mayo biscuit sandwich. It was delicious! So good, I was still thinking about it days later. 😉 They also serve soup and chili and had some amazing looking baked goodies there as well.
I ate my lunch, listened to the chatter of other customers who were there and did some work on my endless blogging to-do list. It was so enjoyable that I hated to leave! It feels like a space where you just want to grab one of those books off the shelf, curl up on the couch with a coffee and stay awhile. I seriously want to start a book club, just so we can have our meetings at The Biscuit Eater! Anyone? 😉
This is the type of cafe that adds character to a community. The type of place you seek out when visiting and that you tell your friends about back home. I’m sure for the locals it’s the gem they want to keep to themselves, but it’s too special for that. With their community love letters and pot luck events, The Biscuit Eater is becoming much more than a cafe and book store, and the South Shore is better because of it.
