Tom Rogers
The South Shore is known for their volunteer spirit. In communities all across this area there are hundreds of people giving back in some way each and every week and making a difference in people’s lives. They are fire-fighting, teaching, entertaining, raising money, driving, cooking, serving and more. Volunteerism is a vital part to building and maintaining our healthy communities and healthy lives. Once a month we feature someone on the South Shore who is volunteering their time in some way to make our community and lives stronger. Gow’s Home Hardware Recognizes Giving Back.
Simple Local Life and Gow’s Home Hardware are proud to recognize this month’s “Giving Back” Recipient…Tom Rogers from Wentzell’s Lake.
Tom Rogers has been volunteering his time as a Director on the Lahave River Trails Association since 2012. The Lahave River Trail Association is a non-profit organization whose goal is to develop and maintain a shared-use trail between Bridgewater and New Germany, which will provide links to other trails being developed in the area and beyond. This year the LRTA took on a Canada 150 Project called “Along the Lahave River from Bridgewater to New Germany 1867 – 2017”. Over 8 weeks, with a different theme each week, they published historical photos and visitor comments, which is now compiled into a book being kept at the South Shore Public Library. You can check out their Facebook Page for a fascinating look of the photos from the past 150 years through the trail area.
Tom also volunteers as a Trustee with The Awesome Foundation of the South Shore. The Awesome Foundation is a group of local citizens who simply believe that the world, and specifically the South Shore, could “use more awesome”. With a team of 30 Trustees, who donate their own money to form grants of $1000 to be given away each month for an “awesome” idea. You can read more about The Awesome Foundations Monthly Live Grant Events here.
Over the past 3 1/2 years there has been over $37 000 put back into the communities for some “awesome” ideas. One of Tom’s favorite pitches from the past 3+ years was from the Queens Manor in Liverpool, who created a Campfire Circle with a fire table and supplies purchased with Awesome funds.
Tom enjoys staying engaged, volunteering and being part of a team that moves a positive agenda forward. In his spare time he and his wife are building a small home, he enjoys sailing and has taken a renewed interest in nature.
I really enjoyed my chat with Tom. It was inspiring and encouraging and he has a wonderful outlook on life and what we do with it. Thank you Tom for all you do and for giving back to your community! 🙂
