The South Shore is known for their volunteer spirit. In communities all across this area there are hundreds of people giving back in some way each and every week and making a difference in people’s lives. They are fire-fighting, teaching, entertaining, raising money, driving, cooking, serving and more. Volunteerism is a vital part to building and maintaining our healthy communities and healthy lives. Once a month we feature someone on the South Shore who is volunteering their time in some way to make our community and lives stronger.
Simple Local Life and Gow’s Home Hardware are proud to recognize this month’s “Giving Back” Recipient, Cheryl Grantham.
Can you tell me what you do for volunteer work?
“I am a volunteer with the Red Cross. I help at the service center in Bridgewater and speak with seniors through a telephone reassurance program, accompanying them to appointments and chatting with them sometimes over a cup of coffee.
I also sew for the Red Cross. I make the walker bags and senior aprons and donate them for sale at the centre. I also make the wreaths for their Christmas sale.”
What is it that compels you to volunteer in our community?
“Being a volunteer helps me feel that I am helping someone else in some small way and the friendships we share with clients and the other volunteers is fulfilling to me as well.”
In her spare time, Cheryl is a postal history collector and just completed a Philatelic History of the Red Cross and documented the history of the HELP desk in Bridgewater. It was the model of the HELP Centre across NS that began in 1996 and spread across the province. Cheryl was lucky to be one of the first volunteers staring in 1998 following her retirement from teaching. Cheryl lives in Cookville with her husband Charlie.
Thank you Cheryl for all that you do and for giving back to the community!
