I have to give credit to my hubby for this one!! It’s always a crowd pleaser and I get many requests for our favorite chili recipe. It’s a great, easy meal, perfect to finish off March Break.
Chili Recipe (Bbq Beans)

Serves: 6-8
Ingredients
- ½ pound bacon (fried and cut)
- 1 or 2 pounds Hamburg
- 1 onion diced
- 1 green pepper
- diced mushrooms
- 1 or 2 cans beans in tomato sauce
- 1 can red kidney beans (drained)
- Sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- ¼ cup vinegar
- 1 tbsp. dry mustard
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp. Chili powder
- ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
- Tabasco or hot sauce (splash)
Instructions
- Fry hamburg (seasoned with onion/garlic salt) and drain off fat and move to a sauce or soup pot.
- In same fry pan as you did the hamburg, fry diced onions, diced green peppers and sliced mushrooms just a little bit.
- Add to meat mixture.
- If you are using pre-cooked bacon, heat in microwave and cut into pieces and add. Otherwise fry bacon, drain on paper towel and add to pot. The pre cooked is obviously a time (and mess) saver and it tastes great both ways.
- Combine sauce ingredients in a bowl. ( If you have gone with higher amounts of hamburg and beans in order to yield a bigger pot of chili, then I'd suggest doing 1½ times the sauce recipe. You can play with the amounts of Tabasco and chili powder depending on your taste. Our family prefers less spicy so we just add a dash of Tabasco and 1 tsp. of chili powder.)
- Whisk together and then pour over meat mixture.
- Stir to combine.
- Add beans with tomato sauce.
- Drain kidney beans and add.
- Heat thoroughly and let cook until simmering.
- Serve with rice or your favorite chili sides.
- *This can be prepared as listed above and then kept warm in a crock pot but I don't recommend leaving it on more than four hours as the beans may be soggy if you cook it all day.
Thanks Vicki! Bacon in chili…this sounds good! As much as I like Mom’s chili recipe, I’m definitely going to have to give this one a try. 😉
