Fall is such a beautiful time of year to get outside and enjoy the cooler temperatures, changing colours and best of all…no bugs! Here on the South Shore, we are so fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful parks, beaches and many wonderful trails. Right in the Town of Bridgewater, we have the Centennial Trail, a multi-use trail ideal for hiking, cycling, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. It’s a lovely trail any time of year, but especially beautiful in October.
There is a small parking area on King Street (1121 King Street), but it does require you to climb stairs to get up to the trail. There are other entry points including one on York Street, if you need an accessible entry.
Centennial Trail Bridge
The bridge on the Centennial Trail was part of the abandoned rail line running between Halifax and Liverpool. The town purchased the sections that were inside its districts and with financial support from Michelin, the bridge was restored with decking, railing and even picnic tables.
The bridge gives a spectacular view of the Lahave River, especially in the fall.
We walked the bridge and turned left, and with its beautiful streams, river views and groomed trail, makes for a perfect way to spend some time outdoors.
Multi-Use Trail
There were lots of people using the trail on the Saturday we visited. Walking and biking, it looks like a favourite for families, seniors and dogs owners.
At the end of the Centennial Trail , you come to two other connecting trails, the Lahave River Trail and the Arthur Young Trail. These are both in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and are recreational trails.
We didn’t measure the distance we walked, which was from the Bridge to the entrance to the connecting trails, but we were about an hour, spending a few minutes enjoying the view from a bench and also time taking photos. I’d say this would be 45 minutes for an average walker. Perfect for a lunch break or even a little exercise while waiting for the kids to finish skating or hockey practice.
Have you walked the Centennial Trail lately? Do you have a favourite section? Do you bike it or ever cross-country ski during the winter? We are so fortunate to have fully developed trails surrounding us. Walking or biking is such an accessible way for all of us to enjoy nature and get outdoors. Who wants to go for a walk? 😉
This is great. We are often in Bridgewater and am always looking for trails to do there. Sounds like we need to bring our bikes in the spring!
This is a perfect biking trail for families Laura…definitely check it out next time your down. 🙂
