There is just something about a farmers market. The chance to chat and connect with the people who are growing your food or preparing your goods. The community feeling of greeting your friends and neighbours, sharing a coffee, or having a chance to catch up and share. There are a pretty special place. We are pretty fortunate here on the South Shore to have a variety of Farmers Markets up and running. After being asked a few times about when and where they are located and operating, we thought we would begin a series on our local farmers markets. No better place to start than with one of the busiest…and the only year round market…the Lunenburg Farmers Market.
The Lunenburg Farmers Market has a long history, going back 34 years. Starting in 1984, with an initial 15 vendors, the Lunenburg Farmers Market has operated in a few locations, but currently runs from the Community Centre and then in the Lunenburg Arena during the spring/summer months.
With tremendous community support, the Lunenburg Farmers Market today has over 60 vendors and a waiting list. There is everything from fresh produce, plants, baked goods, honey, jewellery, art, soap, locally produced beverages, and more. The offerings and variety at the Lunenburg Farmers Market are quite remarkable and show the tremendous talent and hard work of the area.
They have tables set up at the Lunenburg Farmers market, making it a perfect spot to grab a coffee, pastry, or even lunch after you finish your shopping. 🙂
Kurt Wentzell is one of the original founding members of the Lunenburg Farmers Market. Wooly Farm where sells pasture raised lamb, pork and beef as well as farm fresh eggs, sausages and more. Kurt describes the appeal of the Lunenburg Farmers Market for Europeans who live or spend time in the Lunenburg area, and are used to these type of markets at home, where you go and buy your goods for the week. They also see younger people, with children, who want to know where their food is coming from and also embrace the farm market experience.
Laura Mulrooney is the President of the Lunenburg Farmers Market and says they represent the best that our province has to offer, focusing on Lunenburg and Queens Counties. This is truly a community gathering space where people love to spend time meeting and chatting with their local growers and producers each week. The Lunenburg Farmers Market is a proud member of the Farmers Market of Nova Scotia.
If you have to shop…this is the way to do it. 🙂 A lovely walk around chatting with friends and neighbours, supporting our local farmers and producers, what could be better. If you are exploring a zero waste lifestyle , a farmers market is also a good option, with minimal packaging…if any…and the ability to bring your own containers, nags, mugs, etc.
The Lunenburg Farmers Market runs every Thursday morning. During the months of May-September they are located at the Lunenburg Arena, from 8:00am – 12:00pm. In September they move inside the Lunenburg Community Centre and in January the hours change to 8:30am – 12:00pm.
