School is still technically in session, but this is no ordinary year and with lessons moved online and some summer jobs starting back up, we are definitely on our way to to the next season….ready or not. If you or the kids are home all day, or headed out to an 8-hour shift at the garden center or hardware store, they are going to be thinking about one thing….SNACKS! Homemade trail mix is the perfect mix of salty and sweet and fills you up just when you need it. BONUS: Everyone loves it!
Trail mix has always been in our cooler bag for hikes or even some of our Forced Family Fun adventures, but buying the pre-made stuff is quite expensive and sometimes filled with things you don’t need or want. The benefit of homemade trail mix, is that you control what goes in. My go-to has 3 ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to throw together.
Homemade Trail Mix ingredients
I have a standard mix I use when making trail mix at home, but sometimes add extra ingredients if I am making a *special batch. Then I just dump everything into a big bowl, mix it up and then divide it into small containers, jars or baggies.
My combination is No Name Salted Peanuts, No Name Raisins, and M&M candies. If you plan on making trail mix regularly, buy the ingredients in the biggest sizes…especially the M&M’s… and it will cut the cost down.
I sometimes add sunflower seeds and our favorite occasional addition, are PC Coconut Chips…delicious!
Homemade Trail Mix
Ingredients
- 2 cups salted peanuts
- 2 cups raisins
- 1 cup M&M candies
Instructions
- Dump all ingredients into a large bowl
- Mix together
- Package into individual bags or jars or store in a large sealed container
If I am making a batch of homemade trail mix to enjoy at home, I store it in small glass mason jars. It cuts down on waste and they are perfect to grab and eat at your desk etc.
If these are for the kids to take to work, using baggies are just easier for them to shove into a pocket and snack on during a break.
Do you make your own trail mix? Any must-have ingredients in yours? With summer almost here and everyone spending more time outside, why not make a batch to enjoy. Guaranteed it will go fast and everyone will be asking for more.
